TOKYO -- Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) leader Yuichiro Tamaki has caused a stir on social media after remarking during a TV program that an illustration of two male political party leaders tugging his arms was "gross."
During the show, the anchor explained that Tamaki was being approached by both the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), headed by Ishiba, and the main opposition CDP, with the two parties promising to adopt policies sought by the DPFP as a bargaining chip. The anchor then pointed to the illustration, saying, "Now (the DPFP) is at the height of its popularity."
Both the CDP and DPFP made a strong showing in the Oct. 27 House of Representatives election, garnering 148 seats and 28 seats, respectively. With the LDP and its coalition partner Komeito having lost their majority, the DPFP, the third largest opposition party, is now said to hold the casting vote in Japan's political situation.
